After School Programs
Kings & Queens Drill Team
The Kings and Queens Drill team is a unique military-style drill team that teaches students in 2nd grade and up the value of teamwork, discipline and leadership. Drills focus on moving a team in unison through a series of actions to a measured cadence while creating complex formations. Students learn how to improve their concentration, listening skills and ability to follow directions by practicing and performing complicated routines directed by precise orders. The Kings and Queens regularly perform at school functions and community events.
Chimalsi Step Team
Chimalsi (Chee-mah-si), which means “young and proud” in Kiswahili, is a step team for girls in 2nd through 8th grade. The group performs routines from the unique dance tradition developed by African American college students called “stepping.” Stepping comes from a long and rich African tradition that uses the body to create intricate rhythms and sounds through a combination of footsteps, handclaps and chants. The Chimalsi Steppers perform regularly at school-wide functions and local events. The team has won many local competitions and in 2016 was New York State Champion and placed 4th in the Nationals.
Ubuntu Shooting Stars Basketball Program
Shooting Stars basketball team is a coed program for students in grades 4-8. It offers students the opportunity to compete in the Albany P.A.L. Basketball League, and the Albany CYO league as they develop fundamental basketball skills and learn how to participate in organized sports.
Club Uzuri (OO-zur-ee)
An after-school club for kindergarten and 1st grade that builds self-esteem in young girls. The girls learn that they can do anything they put their mind to, they can make a difference in the world, and that they are beautiful on the inside and out just the way they are. Some of the activities that take place in the club include reading and discussing books, writing books and poems together, and making displays to share things we have learned. Club Uzuri raises money for the March of Dimes and participates in the walk each spring. Making and delivering candy grams, as well as hosting bake sales, are some of the ways we raise money.
Delicate Diamonds is designed to give girls in 3rd-8th grade a forum where they can experience team-building activities, talk about issues that are of interest to them and build their self-esteem. Topics include: goal setting, money management, volunteerism, time management, setting boundaries, etiquette, health and beauty, problem solving and community service.
ACCS Drama Club
The Drama Kings and Drama Queens Drama Club is an improvisational theater group. Students write their own poetry, songs and scripts and create scenes and skits live on stage. They learn stage directions, theater terminology and acting techniques that harness their natural energy and encourage their affinity for being the center of attention. Each year, the club performs a play at a community theater.
Club Njia (Track Club)
Track club for students in grades 3-8 designed to teach track and field fundamentals, as well as promote health and fitness. Students learn the proper mechanics of running, proper conditioning, and stretching. Students compete in school, as well as in local meets during the fall (Cross Country) and in the spring (Track).
ACCS Chess Club
The ACCS Chess club is designed to teach students in grades K-8 the fundamentals of the game of chess. Students compete in four to five local tournaments each year including one hosted by ACCS in the spring.
